You simply want to lie on the couch and scroll through social media on your phone. Today, you are in no mood to tackle your tasks. We all have those lazy days. Either because you are actually tired and in need of a break. Or, may be your to-do list is so long and overwhelming. Or may be it’s just a lazy day, because it is!
I know the internet has a lot of productivity ideas and hacks. I have tried a number of them, and some have become a part of me. In this blog post, I am going to share my simple hack for lazy days. It’s something that works for me. And I am hoping it works for you too. Do let me know in the Comments section if it does!
On days I lack motivation, I choose the easiest task I can complete. It may not be a super-important task, and it doesn’t even have to be one I was planning on doing. I find something that will only take a few minutes and less effort to do. Even better if it’s something I enjoy doing. What is important is that I am able to complete that task. Like a table to clean, a bed to make, or an e-mail or phone call that doesn’t require a ton of thinking.
For example, when my kitchen is a mess and I don’t know where to start, and I’ve been procrastinating cleaning it till I have to cook for the next meal, I work on emptying the sink first. I wash the dishes and put them away. Not much thinking or decision-making involved, and it has to be done at some point anyway. Now, here’s how the hack works: The empty sink gives me that sense of accomplishment or satisfaction, which fuels me to keep going. Before I realize, I am actually putting away leftovers, and clearing counters, and the kitchen is clean in about 15 minutes. Same thing happens when you manage to check off one thing from the to-do list. You feel energized to keep moving.
I am no expert, but the dopamine that your body releases when you feel good about the task well done seems to be responsible for the renewed motivation. So, we are essentially hacking the hormones to conquer the lazy day. While we use hacks like this and others to get through times when we don’t feel like doing much, getting enough rest is important as well. If you are in need of a nap and you can afford one, go ahead. The chores can wait. Not all lazy days need to be hacked!
What is your lazy day hack? What motivates you to get off the bed/couch and get going? Please share in the Comments section.
